Ashtang Yoga
The word "ashtang" means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit, and refers to the eight-fold path of yoga outlined by the ancient sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. These eight limbs include ethical guidelines, physical postures, breathing techniques, concentration, meditation, and other practices aimed at achieving spiritual growth and enlightenment.
The physical practice of Ashtang Yoga is divided into six series, each of which builds on the previous one and becomes progressively more challenging. The first series, called the Primary Series, focuses on building strength and flexibility in the body, while the later series incorporate more advanced postures and require greater stamina and endurance.
Ashtang Yoga is often practiced to help warm up the muscles and increase flexibility. The practice is typically done in silence, with the teacher leading the students through the sequence of postures using verbal cues and physical adjustments.
While Ashtang Yoga is a physically demanding practice, it is also deeply meditative and can be a powerful tool for cultivating mindfulness, reducing stress, and improving overall health and well-being.
